Map Your Family Vacation Before You Leave Home

Your vacation should really start at home.  Chart your path before you take a single step. Engage your children in the process from the beginning. Do a lot of investigating online, and share this with the family. Children will appreciate being included in the process, allowing them to participate from the beginning, rather than feeling like cargo being hauled along for the ride. Show them pictures of the destination, and explain what you expect to find, and do, once you arrive. Solicit suggestions for activities.

Here's a travel tip I wish we'd have learned years ago.  When packing your suitcases, use JUMBO SIZE 2.5 GALLON HEFTY ZIPLOC BAGS to organize your clothes in the suitcase.   Makes it easy to pull out what you need each day, keep everyone's clothes separate and move clothes from one bag to another if you're over the weight limit at the airport....We've done that many times.

Here's a link to the best deals on Hefty Jumbo bags at Amazon with 2 day Prime shipping.

If Hefty bags are not your thing, check out the very popular best selling suitcase packing cubes designed to serve a similar purpose.

In this photo you see that I only get half the suitcase as I share the other half with my daughter as we pack for our 13 day European trip.

Maps can be an important teaching tool. Show your children exactly where it is they will be going. Consider printing out a map and charting the trip from home to your vacation destination. Explain how you will get there, making your kids familiar with each stop along the way. Jumping from airport to airport will be more interesting, and perhaps less stressful, if the kids know exactly what is happening, and why. Make the trip there and home again an adventure rather than seeming like a boring commute. Have them visualize in their minds where they are, as if in one of those tiny airplanes crossing a map in a kind of Hollywood movie making cliche. Emphasize the adventure of the travel itself, as well as the adventure awaiting them at your destination.

Even if you’re not planning a trip across the country, or the globe, these techniques can be used. Supply your kids with a roadmap, indicating possible stops at roadside attractions, and allowing them to count down for themselves, by ticking off various roadmarks, the distance left to their final destination. This alone should engage their attention, and cut down on the questions, “Are we there yet?”, coming from the back seat.
