Family Travel Tip - Packing the Suitcase
I love travel tips that cost next to nothing but dramatically help reduce chaos, streamline operations and keep the peace within the family. Therefore, this tip just might be my favorite family travel tip of all!!! I hope you like it as much as I do.
Travel Tip Product - Organizing the Suitcase:Here's a travel tip I wish we'd have learned years ago. When packing your suitcases, use JUMBO SIZE 2.5 GALLON HEFTY ZIPLOC BAGS to organize your clothes in the suitcase. Makes it easy to pull out what you need each day, keep everyone's clothes separate and move clothes from one bag to another if you're over the weight limit at the airport....We've done that many times.
Here's a link to the best deals on Hefty Jumbo bags at Amazon with 2 day Prime shipping.
If Hefty bags are not your thing, check out the very popular best selling suitcase packing cubes designed to serve a similar purpose.
In this photo you see that I only get half the suitcase as I share the other half with my daughter as we pack for our 13 day European trip.
I confess, when I first heard of this tip I shrugged and thought okay, maybe it will make things easier, maybe not. I really didn’t put much credit into the idea. However, my wife jumped right in and stared doing this tip and after our first vacation when I saw the impact and convenience, I WAS HOOKED FOREVER! We all were and we’d never travel again without packing our suitcases the way we do now.

During longer vacations, we share two big suitcases between the 4 of us so basically 2 people per suitcase. I’m sure your family does something similar. The suitcase looks nice, neat and orderly the first day as you pack it nicely with all the clothes folded and stacked neatly. Great!
What happens once you’re at your destination and it’s time for the next day’s clothes or the next or the next? You pull out a shirt, shorts, underwear and socks. What happens to the dirty clothes? Does your suitcase still look nice and orderly? Of course not. Clothes are all over the place. Stacks are no longer stacks. It’s hard to know which clothes are new, which are dirty without a smell test.
While keeping your clean and dirty cloths sorted out is a nice side-effect of this travel tip, it’s really not the mail benefit. The main benefit stars on day 1 of your family vacation and continues to be convenient the entire trip. Even at the airport if your bag is 5 pounds overweight and they want to charge you an extra $50. Even when you arrive at your vacation destination and have 3 days of dirty clothes mixed with all your fresh unworn clothes. Even when there might be 2, 3 or even 4 people all sharing the same suitcase. This travel tip keeps giving and giving the entire vacation.
So here it is. For less than $10 all these troubles go away. Your dirty clothes no longer smell up your fresh clothes, your clothes are easily separate from your children’s clothes. You no longer need to sort through your 2 week’s of shirts to find that pair of underwear. POOF all these problems are gone!
So what’s the tip Brandon? I’m sure you’re asking. Why the dramatic introduction. Get on with it already. Tell me what it is…Okay here goes. Hefty 2.5 gallon Slider bags.
Say what? Why Hefty Slider bags Brandon?
Here’s the deal. Simply roll up your clothes nice and neat and place them in small groups inside Hefty Slider storage bags. The 2.5 gallon ones. Before you close them, suck out as much extra air as you can and zip it shut. Keep your shirts with your shirts, your pants with your pants and your dirty clothes away from your clean clothes. Some people may even be way more organized than me and organize the bags by day. Day 1 in a single bag. Day 2 in another single bag. But we don’t go that far. Shirts in one bag, underwear in another bag.
Now, it’s very important you go with the HEFTY SLIDER LOCK bags. Don’t settle for the Ziploc style. The Slider makes it much easier to open and close than a Ziploc style where you must line up the two zipper ends.
